Backup power for Fort Worth, on ERCOT’s grid

Texas runs its own grid, and February 2021 needs no explanation here. The honest ladder runs from an $850 interlock to whole-home standby from $214 a month — sized from your panel, not a brochure.

After hours — hazards dispatch now ($195, waived for Safety Plan members). Scheduling reopens Monday at 7:30 AM.

Why this is a Texas conversation now

ERCOT is an island: Texas generates its own power and largely cannot import more when the margin gets thin. Most of the year that is a bar-trivia fact. In a February ice event or an August conservation alert it becomes the reason your neighborhood is dark while the rest of the country is not. Add North Texas hail and straight-line wind — the storms that drive Oncor’s longest restoration queues — and backup power stops being paranoia and becomes scheduling.

We are certified Generac and Kohler dealers, and we sell a ladder, not a tier sheet: a generator interlock and inlet feeding a portable you may already own ($850–$1,400 installed), an automatic transfer switch for essentials, and whole-home standby from $12,800. Most families climb it a rung at a time, and the early hardware carries forward.

Sizing, gas, and the winter test

A standby install is a real project: concrete pad, gas line sizing (often the constraint nobody scoped — a 22kW unit wants more gas than some meters deliver), transfer switch at the panel, electrical and mechanical permits, and inspections on both. Two to three weeks end to end when gas capacity is adequate; we check the meter before you sign anything, because finding out after the pad is poured is the expensive order of operations.

Every unit gets a commissioning test under load — and a cold-start check at the fall Safety Plan visit, because on this grid the generator’s first hard week and the grid’s worst week should never be the same week.

On ERCOT’s grid, backup power is not paranoia. It is scheduling.

5 stars.
After the nine-hour outage we asked for a generator quote and got a ladder instead: interlock now, standby later if we wanted it. Took the $1,150 interlock, added the standby in spring, and the first hardware carried forward. Nobody sold us past what we needed.
