What K&T actually is, and when it is actually a hazard
Knob-and-tube is open single conductors on ceramic standoffs — no ground, and designed to shed heat to open air. Original, unmodified K&T is not inherently a fire hazard. Three things change that: blown-in insulation burying conductors that need air, eighty years of taped-over amateur junctions, and fixture boxes carrying 100-watt heat into cloth insulation. Every old Fort Worth attic has at least one of the three — and a Texas attic bakes its wiring at 130°+ four months a year, which is the part the northern guidance never mentions.
The practical pressures are insurance and insulation. Carriers increasingly surcharge or decline K&T homes, and you cannot legally air-seal or insulate over live K&T — which in a 1920s bungalow means the wiring stands between you and every energy upgrade the house wants.
Staged, so you can live there
A full rewire does not have to be a move-out event. Ray Osei stages Arlington Heights and Fairmount bungalows circuit by circuit: kitchen and bedrooms first, K&T isolated and dead as each new home run lands, walls opened surgically and patched. Two to four working days per stage, a permit and inspection record for the whole sequence, and the insurance letter carriers ask for at the end.
