How to know if you have it

Copper prices spiked in the mid-sixties and builders switched branch wiring to aluminum for about eight years. The problem is not the conductor — it is every point where it lands on a device: aluminum expands more than copper with heat, works loose over decades of cycles, and a loose aluminum connection oxidizes and heats instead of just failing dead.

Identification without opening anything: look at the printing on the cable jacket in the attic or basement — "AL" or "ALUMINUM" every foot or so. House built 1965–1973 and jacket unreadable? That is a $189 inspection question, answered in ninety minutes with the panel imaged while we are there.

The remediation, and what we do not do
