What Benbrook built, and how it fails
West of Loop 820 the feeders get longer, the trees get bigger, and a straight-line-wind event that flickers downtown can put Benbrook dark for a day. Since February 2021, nobody here needs the backup-power conversation started for them — they start it themselves. The honest ladder runs: generator interlock with a portable ($850–$1,400 installed), automatic transfer switch, then whole-home standby from $12,800.
Hank sizes from the panel, not a brochure — and on ERCOT’s grid the winterization question is real: a standby unit that commissions in August gets a cold-start test in the fall service visit, because the grid’s worst week and the generator’s first week should not be the same week.
The housing stock is 1968–1980 split-levels and ranches, which puts the aluminum branch-wiring years squarely on this route. Any generator or panel visit here includes a jacket check in the attic; remediation is per-device and often rides the same permit.
The interlock ladder on Timber Creek
After a nine-hour July outage, a Timber Creek family asked for “a generator quote” expecting one number. Hank gave them the ladder instead: $1,150 for an interlock and inlet feeding their existing portable, $3,400 for an automatic transfer switch, $13,900 for standby sized to their well-less but all-electric house.
They took the interlock that week and the standby the following spring — and the interlock hardware carried forward into the final install. Nobody was sold past their outage tolerance, which is why the review below reads the way it does.
